Theatre for Kids

Three NOUVEAU MiME intensive workshops, each dedicated to a different performance field:
– MiMO for Circus and Street Theater
– MiMO for Contemporary Dance and Dance-Theater
– MiMO for Children’s Theater.

Each workshop offers different techniques that can enrich and enhance creative and communicative aspects of each discipline, providing participants with creative and dramaturgical cues and tools for greater expressiveness or effectiveness on stage.

They are aimed at people who practice, study, or perform professionally in the indicated disciplines, or who have a background in mime and physical theater and want to learn more about the techniques addressed.

It is possible to attend one or more workshops, with a progressive discount formula (see table below)

All workshops take place at Philip Radice’s Atelier Teatro Fisico, 12 Carmagnola Street in TORINO.

A KiND OF MAGiC: The MiMO in Circus and Street Theater.

February 22 – 23, 2025

The Circus is the world of illusions and the impossible becoming possible.
Some MiMO techniques fit into this universe and provide additional narrative and visual possibilities.

Objects that rebel against our will, invisible forces acting on us, but also the ability to imitate life (“mime,” after all, comes from the Greek “μῖμος” – Mimos, imitator): mime in a contemporary physical dramaturgy can offer the study of imitation, that is, the artistic reproduction of the world.
Fragments of stories, of lives lived, of characters and representations of the world.

Of street theater, MiMO has always been an integral part, in the long tradition of acrobats, court jesters and Commedia dell’Arte comedians.
In this workshop we will also explore some classic MiMO street “tricks” (fixed points, games of direct interaction with the audience, effective illusions in the particular context of the street).

The workshop days in the hall can be supplemented by an additional day of street work and experimentation a week or two later.

Main topics covered:
● Classical street MiMO techniques (the invisible wall, the
rope, the living statue, etc.)
● MiMO techniques with real objects (fixed point, anarchic object movements
, conflict, etc.)
● The Mimesis: painting the world on stage
● Building a mimic character
● Multiple characters
● Selected techniques of manipulating theInvisible

The workshop is aimed at artists from the world of circus and street theater, or students of circus and physical theater schools. Any discipline is welcome: juggling, acrobatics, clowns, classical street theater, performance art, urban theater…

It is recommended to bring a short issue or even just the draft or an idea to be developed.

Dancing with the Invisible: The MiMO in Dance

March 8 – 9, 2025

The workshop aims to explore new narrative and expressive possibilities for Contemporary Dance and TheatreDance.

A selection of MiMO techniques developed in the artistic and pedagogical research path developed over more than 15 years of teaching, to provide dancers with a toolbox useful in contemporary creation and dramaturgy.

Dancing with the invisible, telling stories or narrative fragments within choreography, effectively communicating thoughts, intentions and moods: MiMO in Dance brings images, meanings, stories or life fragments, symbolic gestures or dramaturgical dynamics more intelligible to the audience.

Main topics covered:
● The Poiesis of MiMO: sculpting the air to create from nothing.
● Study of Universal Dynamics
● Synthesis of Gesture
● Dancing an Action
● “The Foreign Body”: Isolations and Independent Body Movements
● Elements of Contemporary Nonverbal Dramaturgy

The workshop is intended for dancers, performers, students and alumni of performing arts schools and academies with a base of study in contemporary dance, dance-theater or physical theater.

The Endless Stories: The MiMO in Children’s Theater

April 26 – 27, 2025

Children’s Theater is the realm ofimagination, of stories, a place where anything is possible.

The workshop aims to explore MiMO techniques selected specifically for this world, enhancing expressive and narrative possibilities, adding elements of amazement and audience engagement.

MiMO fits into the narrative of a story by accompanying it with images and making possible immediate immersion in different places and time; or it enhances the imagery, making possible things that are not possible in the real world!

MiMO can also allow us to bring inanimate objects to life, making them magical, through MiMO techniques applied to real objects.

Main topics covered:
● Main techniques for manipulating the invisible
● Mime and Storytelling
● Cartoon Mime and magical thinking: beyond the real world
● MiMO techniques with real objects, to make them magical and “alive”
● Practical applications on scenes or small creations

Some of the preparatory and warm-up work will consist of games and exercises designed for children; this is to get into the right mood, but also to learn some possibilities for workshop work with younger children.

The workshop is aimed at actresses and actors working in children’s theater, or students of theater and/or performing arts schools who want to specialize in this area.
A background in theater training is required.

It is recommended to bring a short performance piece or a short story to tell as the basis for a piece of work.
