    WHY MIME?

The Art of MiMO is an extremely diverse, creative, simple, inexpensive and “strategic” art.

Here are seven good reasons to choose it:

    1. You can have everything without having anything

With MiME tools you can make the audience see sets, landscapes, endless objects and impossible creatures…

You don’t need sets to assemble and transport!

    2. It is an international language

MiME is an Art that speaks beyond languages.
It is possible to tell universal stories that can be understood anywhere.

If you love to travel, with MiME you can take your Art all over the world!

    3. It is a poor (and sustainable) art.

You don’t need money to create your own acts or shows.
You need time, dedication, care and love.

The Art of Mime is the poorest Art of all, but at the same time it is extremely rich. And it is undoubtedly the most sustainable!

    4. His matter is the Essential

MiME has the opportunity to investigate and tell the essential dynamics of human beings in depth.
It is a fascinating and vast field of inquiry and allows us to really get to know each other.

With the words removed, what is left?

    5. It is a versatile Art.

MiME is not a genre, nor is it a style-the stereotypical image we all have in our minds is just one of the endless possibilities!

MiME is an Art, and as such it embraces as many possible genres and as many styles as there are people who practice it.

    6. It is a Cross-Cutting Art

The study of MiME is also the study of the body, its expressive and communicative possibilities.

MiME is an Art that can dialogue with other performing arts: circus, dance, drama, children’s theater, illusionism, theatrical improvisation, clown

MiME can enrich and transform an Art, giving more creative and narrative possibilities, or it can totally merge with it giving birth to something new.

    7. It is an inclusive Art.

MiMO can be an Art that breaks down language and hearing barriers!

It is a universal language that can unite deaf and hearing people, and people of all backgrounds.

    CURRICULUM

The Mime Arts Academy offers a course structured on three main subjects (Nouveau Mime, Corporeal Mime and Physical Theater), to which intensive workshops and satellite courses are added according to a principle of flexibility and some personal autonomy, to enable all students to find their own way.

    DURATION: 2 years + 1

The formula (2 + 1) allows people who attend MAAT to have in the two-year course a basic training in the three main subjects, and then decide to specialize in a third year in which the Nouveau Mime course deals with several different genres and performance areas (mime-dance, street mime, mime in children’s theater…) and more space is given to creation and any complementary studies.

    CORPOREAL MIME

    Lecturer: CARLOTTA BASSO
    Duration: 2 years
    Frequency: weekly

<< The way you give is worth more than what you give. So too, the way you walk is worth more than the goal, the way you pick is worth more than the flower…. >>

The technique created by Étienne Decroux is in principle self-sufficient; it provides the artist with a dilated body, which at times will carry the weight of the world and at others the very thin softness of a sheet.

It is a milestone for any artistic journey since, once fluent in this language, the person will have at his disposal a wise body (his scenic compass) and, at hand, the invisible immensity.

Decroux has made modern mimicry an art that can float like ballet and shake like a martial blow.
The goal is to arrive at a body consciousness that can live in a small gesture, a particular kind of walk, in the posture of a gentleman passing by us, but also in the way a cat moves or in the lightness of a falling leaf.

The course offers the study of the art of body mime according to the Étienne Decroux technique.

    Basic principles of technique:
    – Fixed and mobile base movements; progressive and digressive; in the lateral plane, in depth and in rotation
    – Les triples dessins (the three so-called expressive elements: head, torso and trunk)
    – Translations (bodily hierarchy)
    – Compensations (bodily schizophrenia)
    – Study of the arms and its three levels
    – Fingers and hands (the positions and their symbolism)
    – Dynamorhythms
    – Weights and counterweights
    – Playing styles (“Homme de Salon,” “Homme de Sport,” “Statuaire Mobile”)
    – Marches in place and in motion

    Repertoire:
    – Dynamic figures (to put acquired knowledge into play)
    – Repertoire of Étienne Decroux (such as “Le combat,” “L’usine” or “Le menuisier”)

    – Improvisation and stage play

      Carlotta Basso

      Artist and Lecturer

A 2024 graduate of the École Internationale de Mime Corporel Dramatique in Paris, where she specialized in corporeal mime according to Étienne Decroux’s technique, she previously consolidated her foundations in Turin, Italy, at Philip Radice’s Atelier Teatro Fisico, attending the mime and pantomime course.

Over the past few years he has perfected his training by taking part in several stages including “Le théâtre Burlesque” with Jean-Claude Cotillard and “Le mime” with Benoît Turjman.

From 2022 to 2024 he was an active participant in the audience nights organized by the École Internationale de Mime Corporel Dramatique in Paris.

In 2024, from their collaboration with Luis Fernando Nicolosi, whom they met within the spaces of the school, they will give birth to the Hoya Collective, with which they will participate in several festivals and bring their creation to premiere at the “Théâtre Victor Hugo” in Paris, for the evening “La Nuit du Geste.”

Étienne Decroux technique remains basic foundation in his artistic activity, where the quality of movement and the intention behind each gesture are central elements for his constant expressive research in the field of body mime.

The Mime Labs of the year 2025-2026 will be two:

      MimoDance

      Mime Lab #01

      Mime Lab #01: Mimodance

This workshop aims to deepen and investigate the boundary zone between Mime and Contemporary Dance/Theater Dance.
Just like in a chemical research laboratory, we are going to dose ingredients and make them react, causing explosions or changing color and substance to things.

      • What happens when Mime enters the Dance?
      • What happens when it is Dance that enters Mime?
      • When does a danced movement become a telling gesture?
      • What can we tell through a dance?
      • How much can we warp a story while maintaining its comprehensibility?
      • How much can we break down a story without losing it?
      • Etc.
It is a laboratory for research, experimentation and creation.
We will take our cues from our surroundings, looking for something that is not yet there.

      Mime for Video

      Mime Lab #02

Mime Lab #02: Mime for Video

This workshop aims to explore the language of Mime in creating video content, especially for social. A totally new field of research, to be conducted through practical experiments and analysis of references and case studies.

The workshop is structured on long work sessions, monthly or biweekly, lasting about 6 hours each, and on a part of remote work between sessions, through a system of communication rapid to share results and insights.
The workshop will be an opportunity to create video content, which will be posted on the Mime Arts Academy’s accounts (Instagram and Tik Tok) and, of course, also on the accounts of the participating artists.
The idea is that the workshop will also serve as a video production studio that can contribute to the growth of both the Academy and each artist.
The work sessions will take place on a basic basis in the headquarters of Immaginazioni Aps Ets and the Pindarica company, at via Onorato Vigliani 11/7 in Turin (South Mirafiori area): a studio equipped with photographic lights, neutral backdrops or green screens, computers and everything necessary for the creation of professional video content.
It is possible that some work sessions (or parts of them) will take place outdoors (natural places, streets, squares…)
The types of content can be very different:
      • performances filmed in the studio
      • performances filmed in other specific locations
      • urban performance/social experiments
      • etc.
Some of the work will take place between sessions and will be needed to perform video montages and social media research, as well as to monitor insights from published content.
A rapid communication and exchange system will be set up to facilitate remote work (Whatsapp, Google Drive or similar).
The sessions will be core sessions led by Matteo Cionini, with possible input from other external people who are experts in multimedia languages, video content creation and social strategies. Participation of external people may be tied to cash availability.
